First part of the shoot was narrowing down the selection of our talents during their experience. Important not to be obtrusive, I approached slowly, making a selection of candidates for an interview.
I would communicate the selection to my colleague Marianne, who would pick them up and put them in the spotlight for the interview. She had a list of quotes we would need, but mostly let them free to talk about their experience.
Part of my proposal was to produce 4 extra portraits of the teenagers. With minimal extra budget for the edits the client would get 5 films instead of 1. A win-win.
“I don’t want a pumping after movie, I need a compelling story.” That was my briefing. I have quite some previous experience with interviewing teenagers, and the challenge is find the right kids who enjoy to be in the spotlight. So we made a fail-safe plan: we disguise as a press-crew and film their entire experience, so we can observe and pick out the right kids. More about the approach can be found in this article (dutch).
